The Gustave Eiffel hangar

Sighs of relief all round in Amboise. The prestigious Gustave Eiffel hangar near the station has been saved.

Residents, justly proud of their heritage, nervous it might be sold and dismantled, can relax. The Town Council has bought it for the town.

At 800,000 euros, it’s a bargain for an irreplaceable piece of history. For goodness sake Gustave built the Eiffel Tower. Odds are Paris would have bought it if Amboise had not jumped in.

Ernst’s Fountain, Calder’s Crinkly, Amleto Cataldi’s Perseus and the Orthoniel Tower

Mayors of Amboise have a reputation of acquiring one-offs such as the Max Ernst Fountain, Sandy Calder’s Crinkly, Amleto Cataldi’s Perseus with the head of Medusa and the Orthoniel Tower. Now Gustave Eiffel no less!

The mayor does not need to justify stretching the budget for a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy an authentic piece by Eiffel. The town could do with a very large venue to host cultural events. Indeed, a large museum in Paris has already expressed an interest in putting on an exhibition there.

He might even manage to tempt local celebrities Denise Lebrun and Mick Jagger to strut their stuff. Wouldn’t that be another feather in the town’s cap!
